In the first session with a beginner, my main goal is to get a feel for where the athlete is at. I’ll evaluate their current skill level, coordination, and comfort with the fundamentals — things like ball-handling, footwork, shooting form, and overall body control. It’s a low-pressure workout designed to build trust and give me a clear sense of what we need to focus on. From there, I’ll tailor each session to meet their needs and track progress week to week so they’re improving with purpose every time they step on the court.
Starting with lesson 11 and beyond, the focus shifts to sharpening skills in more game like situations. We continue to reinforce the habits we’ve built with more movement, decision making, and live action scenarios. The goal is to make everything we’ve worked on translate to real game play so the athlete not only looks better in drills but plays better when it counts.
From lessons 4 through 10, we’ll turn up the intensity. These sessions will include more speed, more reps, and a higher level of detail. The goal is to take the skills we’ve built and start pushing them to the next level. We’ll challenge footwork, sharpen ball-handling under pressure, and work on making quicker decisions, all while continuing to build confidence and consistency. This is where real growth happens.
In sessions 2 and 3, we focus on sharpening the fundamentals we identified in the first workout. This is where we start building real consistency by tightening up form, improving footwork, and reinforcing proper technique. Each session adds more reps, more detail, and more game-like situations to help the athlete grow more confident and comfortable with the skills we’re developing.
