I’ve learned so much since meeting Thu about music theory and finger picking. He’s really relaxed and flexible during our lessons, and follows my lead in terms of my musical interests. He’s encouraging and super funny. And he’s always there for me — whether I send him a text or a song idea, he replies instantly and puts in extra time to support me. I’m so glad to have Thu as my teacher.

Working with Thu has been such a pleasure. Thu constantly makes working on the guitar fun and exciting, always going above and beyond to make sure we are working on something engaging. We feel so lucky to have found Thu to teach guitar to our 11-year old daughter! She absolutely LOVES her lessons and we are just blown away by her progress. Our daughter has repeatedly comments on how “amazing” and “cool” Thu is. He even sends personalized videos to help her work on her songs. She’s incredibly motivated, and I’m sure that’s in no small part because of Thu’s approach and teaching!

Getting to learn with Thu was an amazing experience: the way he approaches instruction almost feels holistic. He’s able to meet you where you’re at, cater what he’s teaching you to your learning style, and make sure that it’s fun along the way. How it works

Beginner training plan

Your first lessonI first want to get to know your musical taste. For me, guitar starts with the love of music, so we will talk about what kind of music/songs move you. Depending on your skill level, we will orient ourselves to the basics of the instrument, and start with getting you to make a sound on the guitar (a note or a simple chord), and we will establish a few things for you to practice to get comfortable with the instrument.

Lesson 11+At this point we will hone a repertoire of songs that will challenge and excite you, to motivate your continued practice. We can start to identify what your areas of focus can be going forward into intermediate levels (fingerstyle, improvisation, chord melody, composition, etc…)

Lesson 4-10We will dive into more rhythmic variations, introduce more chord shapes, and expand your repertoire of songs in the styles and genres you are interested in learning.

Lesson 2-3We will start with basic strumming rhythm and a few simple chords. If there is a song that you love, we can start there because I believe it is the most motivating to learn how to play a song that you feel connected to.

Advanced training plan

Your first lessonI will take a diagnostic approach to your playing and hear from you what you feel are your blockers for improvement. We will discuss what the next level of playing for you would look and sound like, and establish a sustainable practice regimen.

Lesson 11+Create an ongoing practice that promotes curiosity to continually fine tune your techniques and reinforces your unique artistic voice as a guitarist

Lesson 4-10Look at fundamental theory and systems (CAGED method, modes, complex chord voicings) and leverage them to create your own unique sound and style

Lesson 2-3We will look at relevant repertoire and study ways for you to: • Convert self-criticism into curiosity • Examine mistakes as a path to precision • Learn how to love your own playing

Youth players

Working with kidsWhen working with kids, I make sure to adapt lessons to focus on establishing a firm foundation of rhythm and melody. I incorporate fun activities to make the guitar feel engaging and motivates good practice habits

Working with teenagersWith teens, I start with exploring their musical tastes, and teach theory, technique and guitar fundamentals using the music that they love.
