Your first lessonIn our first lesson, I focus on making you comfortable with your instrument and my teaching style. We’ll talk about your goals, music you enjoy, and your experience level. Then we’ll dive right into playing — even if it’s just simple notes or rhythms — so you leave lesson one feeling like you’ve already made music.

Lesson 11+At this stage we customize the lessons even more — working toward your specific goals like preparing for performances, proficiency exams, auditions, or just mastering pieces you’ve always wanted to play. We’ll fine-tune technique, expand your repertoire, and deepen your musical understanding so you’re not just playing notes but expressing yourself confidently.

How it works

Advanced training plan

Your first lessonIn our first lesson we’ll evaluate your current skills, repertoire, and areas you’d like to improve. We’ll also talk through your short- and long-term goals — whether it’s preparing for auditions, refining technique, expanding improvisational vocabulary, or deepening theory knowledge. Then we’ll dive straight into playing to get a real-time sense of your strengths and needs.

Lesson 11+At this stage the lessons are fully customized. We’ll focus on polishing performance-level pieces, developing your unique sound, and addressing any advanced goals such as arranging, composing, or ensemble leadership. The emphasis shifts to mastery, self-direction, and long-term artistry — helping you transition from skilled player to confident, distinctive musician.

Lesson 4-10During this phase we combine advanced theory, ear training, and stylistic exploration with the real music you’re playing. We’ll analyze pieces in detail, explore improvisation, voicing, and harmony at a professional level, and incorporate recording or performance feedback. By lesson 10, you’ll see measurable growth in fluency, consistency, and artistic expression.

Lesson 2-3Here we identify the “high leverage” areas to work on. We’ll dig into advanced technique, stylistic nuances, and efficient practice methods that sharpen your sound. We’ll also start building or refining a set list or repertoire that aligns with your goals, whether it’s jazz standards, classical works, or original compositions.

Youth players

Working with kidsI adapt my lessons for kids by meeting them exactly where they are musically and developmentally. My first priority is helping them fall in love with music — I want them making sounds, playing songs they’re excited about, and feeling successful right away. Once that spark is there, I layer in technique, theory, and reading skills so the formal side supports their enthusiasm instead of replacing it. I use games, simple exercises, and familiar tunes to keep them engaged, and I let them explore the styles they naturally gravitate toward. By doing this, kids build a genuine connection to music while still developing a solid foundation they can grow from.

Working with teenagersI approach teaching teenagers by focusing first on their connection to music. My top priority is getting them actually playing — learning songs they love, experimenting with styles, and seeing quick progress so they stay motivated. Once that excitement is there, I weave in technique, theory, and reading skills to give them a solid foundation that supports their interests rather than stifling them. With teens, I also spend time on practice habits, goal setting, and showing them how music theory connects directly to the songs they want to play. By meeting them where they’re at and respecting their tastes, I help them develop both skill and genuine passion for music.
