Beginner training plan
Your first lessonFor the first lesson, I’ll always assess the players level first - including asking about any prior racket sport experience which can help shape context for coaching. For the first lesson for a pure beginner, I’ll always focus on some core fundamentals including basics like paddle grip, positioning, and stance. From there we’ll jump into Serves and Returns - the two most commonly hit shots when you first start playing!
Lesson 11+At this point you will have developed into an Intermediate player! From here on out, the topics we cover will be more advanced. We’ll cover things like: Attacking out of the air and off the bounce speedups, counters, advanced play patterns, attacking or defending in transition. We’ll also begin to incorporate more high level strategies that tournament players use.
Lesson 4-10Depending on how fast you progress we can either take more time to expand on topics we covered in the first few lessons or accelerate into more advanced shots and strategy. Things we cover here can include: drop shots (forehand and backhand, topspin and slice), resets (out of the air or off the bounce), and dinks (many different types!). We’ll also begin to cover some more advanced strategies and thought process for how to approach the strategic side of the game!
Lesson 2-3For lessons 2 and 3, you can expect for us to do a quick review of all things covered in lesson 1. From there, all sorts of Volleys will be the name of the game! This includes: punch volleys at the net, swinging volleys for shoulder height putaways, and then overhead smashes for any balls above head height.

How it works
Advanced training plan
Your first lessonFirst lesson will always begin with an assessment of your skills and where you’re currently at! For advanced players (4.0+), these lessons will be highly tailored towards your needs and where you’re currently at with various skills. You can expect a custom plan for improvement and training that is paced at the rate of your improvement!
Lesson 2-3Because the needs of an advanced player will vary widely from person to person, future lesson plans will be hard to predict without first doing an assessment of your skills and goals!

Youth players
Working with teenagersI bring a patient and encouraging attitude when working with youth. I’ll always take the time to explain concepts and clearly and precisely as possible!

What you need to bringComfortable athletic clothes, water, and tennis/court shoes (running shoes are NOT ideal!!). Oh and of course, a good attitude and ready to learn! :)

What I can bringBall hop full of Pickleballs, loaner paddles, demo paddles upon request, cones and other drilling materials

About your pickleball coach

Hey everyone, I’m Jon! I’m a 5.0 level player and professional coach that has 3+ years of teaching experience at The Hub Alameda and locally. I’m looking to bring my expertise to help local players improve their game! As someone who worked their way up to 5.0 from the intermediate level, I am intimately familiar with all the pitfalls along the way from beginner to advanced levels and what it takes to grind to that level. My teaching philosophy has always been rooted in approaching the game as simply as possible. I emphasize simple, repeatable shot mechanics. And equally important, I take the time to explain how shot selection and strategy impact your progress just as much as shot execution! I’m 100% confident that in just a single, one hour session we can make noticeable improvement in either shot quality or a shift in strategic thinking. You can always expect each session to be tailored to your specific needs. Pacing will always be adjusted to your progress. At the end of each session I’ll send you notes for the key points we covered as well as actionable feedback. Looking forward to working together to help you improve your game to the next level! Happy to answer any questions.

Jon was my first pickleball coach for a good part of one year. My simple goal was to strive to improve my shot skills to unlock my potential through self-awareness. Jon truly enhanced my development as a pickleball player by focusing on the fundamentals. Jon organized coaching lessons focused on repetitive drills, drills and more drills – starting with dinks, drops, resets, punch volleys, flick volleys, speed ups, deep serves, footwork, positioning, placement and court awareness. Jon’s clear explanations and demonstrations was key to learning. Jon kept me motivated, inspired and encouraged. Jon quickly adapted to my learning style with good and calm talk that effectively helped me during drills to reinforce correct form & habit. Jon observed early on that I was reaching & hitting off-balanced more than I should; afterwards I became more conscious & deliberate about moving my feet to avoid stretching. I learned about my habits that influenced the changes that made me more confident. My sessions with Jon became an enjoyable journey of self-discovery which exceeded my goal.

Jon is a great Pickleball coach! He takes the time to explain why we are learning certain skills and strategies so that you can understand better. Jon does a thorough evaluation of your level early on so that he can put together individual lesson plans and a overall big picture program. He sees when you get something quickly and moves on and also when you don't and stays with that until you do with great patience and encouragement. I love his texted "recap" of each lesson so I can use it as a reminder to work on what we learned in rec games until our next lesson. If you want to get better at Pickleball, go see Jon!

Jon is a true gem! I started attending the Hub's pickleball beginner socials about a year ago and Jon was our fearless leader. He is always so patient and kind when instructing us not only on the rules of the game but also giving us tips and tricks to improve it as we gained skills and knowledge. He would sometimes play against us to improve our skills. A group of us took a few private lessons from him and I can say that my serve was transformed after just one session! Fun to work with, full of knowledge about the game and a great coach!
