Beginner training plan
Your first lessonLesson 1: Get to know the player’s ability, goals, and focus. Review some fundamental play styles and strategies (singles vs. doubles), best practices for strokes: serves, forehands, backhands, two-handed vs. one-handed shots, dinks, drops, drives, overheads, lobs, return of serves, and resets, focusing on footwork, grips, and ball manipulation.
Lesson 11+Continued drilling, singles play, mini-games, and “trophy”-hunting: ATPs, Ernes, Burts, “shake-and-bake” formation, and lob coverage.
Lesson 4-10Lessons 4-10: We’ll continue to play skinny singles, games like 7-11, and other drills to reinforce a leveling up of skill. We’ll focus on correcting problem areas related to footwork, resets, ball placement, and technique.
Lesson 2-3Lessons 2-3: We’ll build on our initial lessons, refining strokes and start playing skinny singles, stopping to teach as needed. We’ll also be assigning homework and encouraging routine play at recreational courts.
What you need to bringBring your paddle (although I have extras), water, court shoes (they’re better than cross-trainers as they slide and support knee health)
