Beginner training plan
Your first lessonFirst Lesson: Introduction & Basic Skills Goal: Get students comfortable with the game, rules, and basic movements. 1. Welcome & Warm-Up Short intro to what pickleball is and basic court layout. 2. Paddle Grip & Ready Position Eastern grip intro. Demonstrate and practice ready position and footwork. 3. Basic Dinking Introduce the dink shot and kitchen rules. Practice dinking cross-court and straight on. 4. Serve & Return Basics Demonstrate underhand serve (focus on control, not power). Practice serves and returns with partner. 5. Mini Game or Controlled Rally Short-court rally within the non-volley zone to practice control and consistency. 6. Wrap-Up & Homework Review key points: grip, serve, dinks, and movement. Encourage watching a pro match or practicing grip at home.
Lesson 4-10Lessons 4–10: Strategy, Movement & Match Play Goal: Improve consistency, court coverage, and introduce strategy. Warm-Up Dynamic drills, shadow swings, dink rally warm-up. Focus Areas by Lesson: Lesson 4–5: Third shot drop & drive combinations. Partner communication drills. Court positioning (transition zone awareness). Game play with coach feedback. Lesson 6–7: Net play focus (volleys, punch volleys). Movement drills: lateral shuffle, split step. Doubles strategy: stacking, switching sides. Game scenarios: serve & return patterns.
Lesson 2-3Lessons 2–3: Core Skills & Game Play Intro Goal: Develop core strokes, improve consistency, and start basic gameplay. Warm-Up Light movement and shadow drills with paddles. Lesson Focus Areas: Lesson: Serving & Returning Review Add depth and placement focus. Dinking Drill Cross-court & diagonal dink rallies. Volley Technique Introduce volleys and net position. Mini Games Half-court games emphasizing dinks and volleys.

Working with kidsBeginner Pickleball Plan for Young Kids Lesson 1: Introduction & Fun with Fundamentals Goal: Introduce the sport, build excitement, and learn the basics. 1. Welcome & Icebreaker Show them the ball and paddle, let them feel it. 2. Warm-Up Game β€œRed Light, Green Light” with paddle in hand to get them moving and practicing control. 3. Grip & Ready Position Teach the "shake hands" grip. Practice the ready position with fun cues 4. Paddle Skills Station Bounce & Catch: Bounce ball on paddle and catch. Air Dribble: Keep ball bouncing on paddle while moving. Wall Bounce: Hit ball against a wall and catch rebound. 5. Serving Basics Show underhand serve motion. Practice serving into a big target 6. Mini Rally Game Partner up for small rallies, aiming to keep the ball going back and forth. Count how many hits in a row. 7. Wrap-Up Circle time: ask what they liked most. Give a fun pickleball-related challenge to try at home (like paddle bouncing 10 times).
